Durham & the Triangle Q&A with The Eco Man Customers

  • August 12, 2025
  • Kevin

The Eco Man has been receiving a plethora of inquiries during this particular time of the year from a diverse range of our valued customers. These questions not only reflect the concerns of individual homeowners but also serve as a useful resource for others who might find themselves grappling with the same issues. By addressing these common queries, we aim to provide clarity and assistance to anyone facing similar challenges. Below, we present a selection of frequently asked questions along with detailed answers that might help shed light on your pest-related concerns…

Q. Why are various pests still present even this time of the year?

A. Well, there are numerous factors that contribute to the persistence of pests during this season. These include environmental elements such as temperature fluctuations, the specific season we are in, and daily weather conditions—whether it’s sunny, cloudy, icy, rainy, or otherwise. For instance, this year has seen an unusual number of warmer days, which can signal to pests that it is safe to emerge from their hiding places and search for food earlier than usual. Additionally, the changing climate has altered pest behavior, allowing them to thrive in conditions that may have previously been unfavorable.

Q. Why do I tend to see pests in my kitchen, and/or bathroom more than anywhere else?

A. The kitchen and bathroom are prime locations for pests due to the abundance of resources they offer. Water lines in these areas often lead to condensation, creating excessive moisture that can attract pests. Moreover, leaks can lead to pools of moisture that serve as an inviting habitat for these unwanted guests. Coupled with easy access to food products, particularly in the kitchen where crumbs and spills are common, it’s almost as if there’s a neon “FREE” sign for pests. This combination of moisture and food sources makes these areas highly appealing for various pest species.

Q. Should I be concerned if I see more than one Cockroach in my home?

A. It depends! However, let me elaborate further on this matter. The presence of cockroaches can vary significantly between species. Most homes will never experience the level of infestation or the alarming habits and life cycles associated with the notorious German Cockroach. In contrast, you might encounter other, more common species such as the American Cockroach or the Smoky Brown Cockroach, which may appear sporadically throughout your home, often seen as one here or there. It is essential to identify which species you are dealing with, as this will influence the necessary control measures. During a thorough inspection, I will determine the specific species and advise you accordingly.

Q. Where do pests hibernate/overwinter during the winter?

A. Many species of pests, including Ants, Cockroaches, and Mice, must seek out warmer places to overwinter as temperatures begin to drop in the fall. Some manage to find suitable shelter, while many pests unfortunately do not survive the harsh conditions and either die off or fail to hatch before the cold sets in. Common overwintering sites include areas on or within your home such as beneath exterior siding, in brick veneer weepholes, and in cracks and crevices of structures. Additionally, slab pours around the house, inside garages, and among stored items can provide refuge. Indoors, spaces like attics can become prevalent areas for pests to hibernate, as they offer warmth and shelter from the elements.

Having a recurring pest control service is an excellent strategy during the colder seasons. A PRO can effectively prevent and manage overwintering in these vulnerable areas, potentially decreasing pest activity significantly during the warmer months when they are more active. This proactive approach can save you from the inconvenience and discomfort of dealing with pest infestations later on.
